Learn Spanish-Present Tense Verb To Be -Ser Part II

 What do we know so far?
Ser is used to identify people and things.
Ser is used to express nationality.
Ser is used to express personality.
 Other uses of ser:
Ser + de (from) is used to express national origin.
Cecilia es de venezuela. (Cecilia is from Venezuela.)
Edgar es de Yucatán. ( Edgar is from Yucatán.)

Ser+de (made of) is used to tell of what material something is made.
La mesa es de madera. ( The table is made of wood.)
El coche/carro es de metal. ( the car is made of metal.)

Ser + para (is for) is used to tell for whom something is intended.
El regalo es para Roberto. (The present is for Robert.)
La comida es para María. (The food is for María.)

Ser is used to tell time.

Es la una. (It's one o'clock.)
Son las tres. (It's three o'clock.)
Notice: Es la una. (It's one o'clock.)
"Es la una" refers to one hour = una hora.
Son las tres. (It's three o'clock.)
"Son las tres" refers to three hours= tres horas.
When there are more than one hour use son.

Ser is used to express generalizations.
Es importante estudiar. (It's important to study.)
No es necesario trabajar todos los días.
(It's not necessary to work everyday.)
Notice: The use of the infinitive after the impersonal expressions like estudiar and trabajar after
importante and necesario.
